John Knox Center

 John Knox Center is located in Ten MileTennessee and is owned by the Presbytery of East Tennessee and accredited by the American Camp Association. Our education program offers approximately 30 classes which fall into one of three categories: academic, team building and outdoor recreation. We have a nature center on site and high and low ropes courses. We offer 1-5 day residential programs, day trips and outreach to schools as well as programming to a variety of other groups throughout the year on weekends. The John Knox Center has a summer camp program that runs for two months during the summer.

Program Staff Job Description:
We are looking for program staff who are enthusiastic and passionate about working in the outdoors with children and adults. From teaching science based classes to middle school students and facilitating high ropes course experiences to hosting retreat groups and leading programs in congregations, our entire staff serve with a spirit of hospitality. 

Requirements:

Program Staff teach up to 5 hands-on not lecture environmental education classes per day to students in grades 4-8. School teachers and/or chaperones are in classes to help discipline students and offer assistance when needed. Classes typically have 10 to 15 students in each. Program Staff also work weekends hosting retreat groups as needed. You must be able to lead songs and make announcements in front of large groups, coordinate food waste skit and program, maintain class materials, feeding animals etc. We have a low and high ropes course that staff are required to teach and facilitate. 

Other requirements include: leading prayer and devotions with staff; participating in worship services with staff or with religious groups who attend the facility. Program Staff must be comfortable with teaching team building based classes with faith based concepts i.e. body of Christ, treating others well etc. Program Staff teach secular (non-faith) and faith based environmental education classes to a wide variety of groups including public schools, churches, businesses, Christian schools, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and non-profit organizations.

Program Staff need to, at times, lead programming in congregations along with other faith based organizations and will need to be able to describe curricula and the mission of the John Knox Center.

 

Qualifications:
 A BS/BA in Biology, Environmental Science or related field is preferred but not required.
 You must be a professing Christian and have the ability to articulate your faith.
 Some teaching experience is recommended but not required. River Ridge provides a hands-on learning
  experience for program staff to grow as educators.


Seasonal Positions:  

Short Term Seasonal Positions: (April-May or August-November) For those who join our team for either the spring or fall season.

Long Term Seasonal:  (April-November) For those who posses exceptional hospitality skills or additional certifications.

Substitute Positions:  Many times we host groups who are large and require additional staff beyond those who live on site.  These are substitute program staff live in the area and commit to one or more days periodically throughout the season.  Housing is a possibility when working multiple consecutive days.  


Compensation:
Program staff are paid bimonthly at a starting rate compensatory with experience. Housing is provided, and board is available when groups are onsite.


Staff housing: 
Program Staff stay in a renovated cottage with lounge area, roommate, bathroom, mini-kitchen, phone and laundry. Internet and wireless connections are available in the main office.

 

Location: 
River Ridge Environmental Education Program is located at the John Knox Center about 45 min. from Knoxville(closest large city), Kingston is 20 min. away - bank, grocery, gym, etc. We are 1 hours from Great Smoky Mountains, 2 hours from Nashville, 3 hours from Atlanta. We are located on 143 acres, 3 point peninsula overlooking Watts Bar Lake which is really the TN River with 4 miles of coastline.
